Here’s something to try out. Before you submit that nasty comment as an anon on someone else’s profile, just stop for a moment. How about instead of insulting the person, you compliment them?
The world is portrayed by social media as a horrible place. News stories are always about tragedies, and people everywhere already have enough shit on their plate. Insulting someone is easy, especially when your hiding behind your computer screen on anonymous. There are way too many tumblr anons readily available to provide something rude or offending. And there is so much ammo to provide for the degrading jeers anons can make. From social media’s perception of needing to be ken and barbie, to personal beliefs of religious rights and wrongs, to personal arrogance and judging others for their mistakes/actions, or just cyber bullying just to make oneself feel better.
You never know what that one anonymous comment to do. Sure, some may take it in stride and laugh it off, but others won’t take it so well. They are the ones crying at night, unable to sleep because of your comment. They are the ones who have lost all self-esteem thanks to you. They are the ones who cut themselves because they feel alone and worthless. So stop. Think about what repercussions your abusive remark on this person might have.
Instead, be nice. Find something about this person you can compliment. Find something that makes them unique, complete, and amazing. It takes so much more effort and creativity to do so, and the payoff in the end is so much better for both of you. Anyone can insult someone else or make them cry, but can you be that person that puts a smile on their face? I hope so.
